Overwhelmed - Life Has Me Busy

Everyone who knows me personally knows that I'm a little OCD...I get into something and go full bore only to lose interest in a few months. And when I mean full bore I am completely obsessed and go over the top - I live and breathe it - it becomes my life! So far this year I have had 3 passions - sewing, couponing and running.  I still coupon - and pretty compulsively but my new obsession is this damn running. Anyway - I'm way off track with this post. My point is I get overwhelmed because  I take on too much and I cannot just casually do anything.

This week, I have school work (which includes an exam tomorrow), working, getting ready for our annual costume party (and getting my costume), Dan has been working late, I had dinner for Mike's birthday, my nieces are over for the night tomorrow, trying to run and train for this half marathon, and I have to clean the house along with trying to keep David amused and fed. Ahhhhhh!!!!! I'm in over my head...48 hours from now I will be in a much better place...I'm thinking Sunday I will head down to DC and cheer on the Marine Corps Marathoners as a treat to myself!

I feel better now :)

Horrible Running Day

I haven't run in a week. My knees have hurt and with sunrise happening later and sunset happening earlier I don't have daylight to run during the week.  Looks like a treadmill will be in my future during the week. My goal was 4+ miles this morning. It was cold so I got dressed in pants and a long sleeve t-shirt knowing that I would get warm but that isn't something that bothers me most of the time. We decided to go to the cross island trail because that allowed David to play at the park with Dan while I got in some miles.

The beginning of the run was great. I started on a long stretch of trail that was wooded, shaded and cool. There was a nice breeze going and I was chugging along at a slow pace (11:00). Nearing 1 mile I came out of the trees and damn was it hot. I think the air temp went up 10 degrees in the mile I had been out of the sun. I was still okay though and kept on going. The second mile was okay but I started getting bored. The trail isn't the most exciting place to run. There are a couple people you pass but there are no houses, nothing to look at, no one to stare at...just me and my thoughts. Unfortunately today I didn't have anything interesting to think about. So, I called Dan in the hopes that he could just meet me at the end of the trail (about 3 miles). He didn't answer. I turned back and that's when all the self doubt started. I was overheated, I was unhappy, and I had nothing to think about except how much this sucked.

Overall, I struggled to get back to where I started. I had called Dan a couple more times hoping he would come pick my lazy butt up...he never answered. My knees still hurt but not quite as bad so I'll jump on the treadmill on Tuesday and see if I can get some miles going and get my confidence back up.

Holy Knees!

I am having issues with my knee again. The good news is I think I have diagnosed myself...as a lazy stretcher. When will I learn!!!!

My body has always had a very strong lower body, very weak upper so when I started running it didn't take long for my legs to begin bulking up.  Well, unfortunately I did not stay true to my stretching routine and I have lost a lot of my flexibility.  It seems that my knee starts acting up and then I stretch out my hamstring and calf then the pain begins to diminish.  It is amazing how important stretching and proper warm up is and it is even more amazing that his is the second time this has happened. It really is time to take control of the issue and make sure it doesn't happen again.

The pain was so bad last night that I couldn't bring myself to head outside and run. I was upset - I want to rock this half marathon and the training isn't starting the way I had hoped.  So I've been stretching all day and hope that I will be able to get out there today and get a few miles under my belt.

The Journey - Training for my 1st Half Marathon

If you would have told me a couple months ago that this winter I would be training to run a half marathon I would have told you that you were crazy. Not in a million years would I have thought that 1. I would ever be considered a runner and 2. That my body would be able to handle it.

A little background. I was a gymnast for many years and in the course of that sport I had a lot of injuries. Most of them affected my legs and unfortunately from the multiple injuries, severity, and continued abuse on my joints I ended up having both ankles worked on.  After having both reconstructed for debris and instability I really thought that taking on running would put me into a pretty painful place. I'm excited to say that isn't the case. I haven't really had any type of pain from my ankles or feet. Most of the issues I've had stem from my knees. I did have surgery on my left knee due to Osgood Schlatters but really they have held up remarkably well.

I've setup some goals and a training schedule for the next 22 weeks. Overall I would like to finish my first half marathon in 2 hours and 11 minutes. I think that is reasonable and puts me at a 10 minute mile. I'm going to come up with a little schedule that I'm going to try to abide by...even through the winter and the holidays!

I'm really excited and I'll be doing it with Brandy so I'm sure it will be a blast!

I Did It!! 5k Complete in 8 Weeks

After 8 long weeks I finish the Baltimore 5k this morning!! It was a little chilly when we got up this morning but as we started to get close to the start line I could feel myself warming up a little.

The start line was crazy crowded. We started about halfway back and still had to weave around people who were walking. Hello! Start in the back! I'm all for people walking or walk/jog but if you think you will finish in the last half of the field please start there. I anticipated placing 1,500 in a 3,000 field so I chose the middle and went there - it isn't hard. Sorry for the rant.

The first half of the run was uphill but definitely not horrible. There were a couple times where I wondered how much longer the hill would continue. At the turn around we headed back downhill but the streets got busier at that point. People (not runners) were trying to cross the street in the middle of the race. Dodging people added a new element to the entire thing. We were headed downhill and I was feeling pretty good.  At 2.5 miles we got to run through the warehouse section of Camden Yards which was really cool and kept me distracted for about 15 seconds! I saw what I thought was the finish so I took off sprinting...except it wasn't and I still had about a tenth of a mile to go so I finished the race strong which really made me feel good.

Overall, I am really proud of what I did today. I've been running for 8 weeks, I finished a 5k strong, and I crushed my goal of 34 minutes coming across the line at 32:11!

1,271 out of 3,000 overall
162 out of 400 in my division (Fem. 24-29)
616 out of 1928 in females

Pee Anxiety

I don't know if this is a medical term or not but I'm having serious Pee Anxiety. It all started 4 weeks ago when I ran the Run4Shelter 5k. I didn't really take that run seriously, I wanted to finish but it was more a practice round for the Baltimore 5k. About a quarter of a mile into the run I realized that I had to tinkle...so I held it...and held it...and held it for what seemed like eternity! It was all I could think about until finally at 2.25 I had to stop.

Ever since, I have had severe Pee Anxiety every time I go to run. It is always within the first mile and once I stop I never have another issue. I've tried going right before I leave and it doesn't seem to matter - the anxiety gets to me and I always stop. I'm already starting to get anxious about tomorrow and my damn bladder. All I need is to focus on something else and I'm sure I will be fine but damnit my brain is not strong enough!

T-Minus 3 Days

Tonight was my last run before the Baltimore 5K - the whole reason I started on this running journey. Thanks again Brandy :) I have been a ball of nerves all week - I'm anxious, I'm nervous and I really wish Saturday morning would be here already.

A friend of mine asked why I was nervous, I'm not running to win anything, and they are right; in all reality I'm hoping to hit smack dab in the middle of the field. My biggest issue is that I set unrealistic goals for myself and when I don't attain them it ruins the entire experience.  I should come running across the finish line with a huge smile on my face because I finished. 8 weeks ago I hadn't run more than 50 feet in 8+ years. So, instead of being excited to complete I've set a goal for myself of under 34 minutes. Now in my mind this shouldn't be an issue since my last 3 runs were at 33:36, 34:33 and 34:29 so I've done it before so what is so hard about it! Well, I've never run that course before, I'm going to be running in a huge pack and I'll be super nervous.

Anyway, small update from my last post...I said I was only going to run 5k's from here on out...well that was a tiny fib since I only ran 2 miles last Saturday.  I also said that I was going to work up to 3.5-4 miles by the 15th...another fib since I haven't done it.  Oh well, not the end of the world since I know I will be able to finish on Saturday.

Today was my last run before Saturday so wish me luck and here's hoping I get a few good race pictures and a time under 34 minutes!

13 Days to Go

I'm done counting how many days I've been running. Instead we are going to count down until the Baltimore 5k which is what got me started on this little journey anyway.

The temperature has really changed here. In the course of 24 hours we went from mid 70's to not able to break out of the 50's. Yesterday was a dreary day, drizzling most of the day and 55. I went out to run a full 5k and the air was pretty brisk. I started slow since I'm trying to keep my knee from exploding. It wasn't too bad and by the end I felt like I was a little overdressed. I will be interested to see what the weather is like for this run in Baltimore. From here on out I'm only running 5k plus. By October 13th I would like to be able to run 3.5 - 4 miles just so I know I can "easily" run the 3.11.

Anyway, I'm scheduled to run MWF this week so I'll update and let you know how I'm making out :)
